Otranto

Otranto is known as the City of Martyrs, these masters of the Christian faith were sanctified on 12 May 2013, and the first great Gothic novel in European literature, Horace Walpole’s ‘The Castle of Otranto’, was set here.

Among its main monuments are the Cathedral of the Annunziata inside which are the remains of the 800 martyrs who lost their lives at the hands of the Turks during the massacre of 1480, the Aragonese Castle and the small Byzantine church of St. Peter rich in medieval frescoes.
