Alberobello is located in the province of Bari and is the land of the Trulli. Its historic centre has been declared a National Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The ‘trulli’, are conical houses initially built without the use of mortar and with only dry stone placed one on top of the other, crowned with limestone roofs, culminating in pinnacles of magical significance.
The itinerary usually begins at the Terrazzino Belvedere with a fantastic view of the Rione Monti, consisting of around 1000 trulli.
The route continues with a visit to the historic Rione Aia Piccola, consisting of around 400 trulli, still used as dwellings.
There is another place in Europe that has trulli and that is the Rhineland, in Germany. The Apulia people who migrated to that part of northern Europe in the last century built some while working in the fields.
